Buying gain in bulk (Sack)

Our local malting company closed down. United Canada Malt. The rail service stopped and trucking is too expensive.

Sometimes the 10lb bags of grain from MoreBeer with the free shipping works out a better deal than buying a full sack. And you can mix up your base malts that way.

That’s what I was talking about, but I get smaller amounts since I usually brew three gallon batches and use more like 5-7 pounds in most batches.

So, you can get free shipping on 50 lbs of assorted grains, but not on a sack?  Odd.

Hopefully no one from Morebeer is reading this topic.

Well, no. 
A 55# sack of, say, Thomas Fawcett Maris Otter costs $65.99 plus $18.11 for FedEx to ship it the 700 miles to my location.  Total = $84.10
At the 10# price with free shipping, that grain costs $1.75 per # or $96.25 for 55 lbs.
But for about $12 more I can get an assortment of grains.

Edit:  For Morebeer’s cheapest malt (Briess 2-row) the additional at the 10# price is only about $3.
