Favorite hopping methods

Curious about this. Usually- 95% of the time I just hop at 60 or 45 and leave it at that. At 30-40 IBU’s it’s plenty bitter. Sometimes I throw some hops in at 20-15 minutes along with the Whirlfloc tabs… I’ve done it all-which-aways but how have you done it? Any consistent method for your favorite beer?

I’ll add hops all throughout the brew at any time depending on what I’m brewing.  90-0, FWH, Dry hops all work for me.  Completely depends on the beer.

So I am assuming you mean “how do you use your hops”?  But as far as the “bittering” goes I mainly add my bittering additions at 60 minutes, no matter how long I am boiling.  Of course there will be some bitterness in the late boil additions, but I am not really counting on those for that reason.

Completely depends on the beer I am brewing but a typical addition for me would be 60 min, 20 min, 10-2 min.

Not enough choices.  I’ll add at 60-90 minutes on some beer, FWH on others, and not add any hops until the last 15 minutes of the boil on apas and ipas.

I’ve always thought that bittering was around 60 minutes, flavoring was around 20-15 minutes, and aroma was around 5-0 minutes (excepting FWH-ing, of course).  Kind of hard to answer this quiz.

I apologize folks for the confusion. I’ve asked a Mod to maybe help me fix this.

For me “bittering” is more of a blanket term for any hop additions whether it’s for aroma, flavor, FWH etc… So my bad. I was a little PUI last night.

The intent of the poll is to see if Homebrewers have a tendency to hop a certain way more than any other. Obviously if your brewing runs the gamut it’ll be difficult to answer this poll; however my suspicion is that most HB’ers stick to just a few styles they like the most- as I certainly do.

It depends entirely on style and the sort of hop character I want in my beer.

For a big, hoppy monster with loads of bitterness, as long a boil as possible for the bittering hops (at least 1 hour, more like 90 or 120 minutes). Flavor additions at 15-30 minutes. Aroma hops at 0-5 minutes before flameout. Dry hops in secondary. Fairly standard.

FWH (or at the beginning of the boil sometimes), hop bursting (20 minutes and less) and dryhopping.  Of course the hop bursting and dryhopping is more for flavor and aroma than bittering.

I usually add my bittering hops at 60min.  Flavor and aroma hop additions run from 20min all the way down to dry hopping and anywhere in between.  I like hopbursted IPA’s and they often don’t get a bittering addition just 20 and less…but again it really depends on the beer style for hop additions.

I like to do a combination of FWH at 60 minutes or so then do most of my other additions at 10-0 minutes.  An example for 5 gallons would be 1oz of Columbus FWH 60min then 2oz cascade at 10 minutes and 2oz centennial at 5 minutes.  Pretty simple, easy to maintain, and has great aroma and flavor.
