First brew comments liked

Well I completed my first brew which was a canadian blonde and the orignal gravity befor yeast was 1.050. I hope that is good I guess I will wait for activity in one to two days. Is it normal to not see activity soon? I mean within an hour or two. But other than that hope it comes out okay.

Thanks
Lee

Congrats on your first brew.  Normally you should see activity within 12-24 hours.

Well I checked it this morning and noticed it bubbling. So I guess thins are starting to happen. My wife also tells me it has been making weird noises during the day. I told her to make sure the top does not blow off.

LOL, did you give her more instruction than that?  I can see it now, your phone rings at work and it’s the wife… “Honey, I’m sitting on top of your bucket but the top is still trying to blow off.”

Hmmm…If it was my wife, I’d be giving different instructions, regarding a top blowing off…

bah-dump-tch.

Bubbles, good. Welcome.

if it gets real intense, replace the bubbler with a blow off hose and a jar o water.

Welcome! and what ever you do, don’t count the bubbles.

and do NOT sniff them!

Horsefeathers…nothing like sitting there sniffing your bubbles… oh wait, I think I know what you meant now…never mind. ;D

Congratulations!
The only time to count the bubbles is when you can’t sleep at night… thinking about your fermentation!

well so far so good and not going to smell the bubbles not good at this point in time. I am getting a little more activity but feel it will be ok.

Well I moved to secondary today after six days in primary. Weird smells daughter did not like. Well before I pitched yeast on day one my hydrometer reading was 1.050 and today it is 1.010. Does this sound right? beer looks good and will let sit in secondary for another week or till my readings are the same for three consecutive days then bottle.

Thanks
Lee

Yes and no. The gravity is about right, but the three day rule is generally considered for primary and not secondary. At 1.010 you probably are done- depending on the recipe.

it is a extract brew by coopers called canadian blonde. Will it hurt for it to stay in secondary for another week?

Did you use sugar in the recipe? Anyway let it sit in primary for a couple days since it’s in there already. A week is fine. Bottle it up and a week or two later it should be ready to drink.

No, that will be fine.

Usually it is always better to let it wait another week than to bottle or keg too early.  Let us know how it turns out.

lees_brew,

You do know the “secondary” is not really necessary, don’t you?

For these type of beers you can just leave it in the “primary” until its finished without any effects. Saves you some time and trouble and lowers the risk of extra handling.

I did not i used a brew enhancer and will save the corn sugar for bottling.
