Foil fell off yeast starter.....

Should I still use it, or make another one?

If it hasn’t started collecting fruit flies or other critters I say use it.

It might also depend on how long it was uncovered and at what stage it fell off.  Uncovered for a day while fermenting, no problem.  Uncovered for 3 or 4 days after the yeast started to settle, I would be less likely to be comfortable using it.

I made the starter last night, so it’s been about 12 hours.  I have a feeling that when I shut the door of the room it was in it blew off.  I obviously had the foil on too loose.  I’ll probably just push back brew day one day and make another one today.  Probably money well spent.

It should be fine for this batch but I would probably not harvest the yeast to reuse a second.

My thought is that if your foil was so loose that door wind would knock it off that probably it’s loose enough for wilds to find their way in, even if it didn’t fall off.

Hi, just curious what your thoughts are here?

The yeast should out compete any contamination by their sheer volume but every gen any contamination will continue to grow until noticeable.

Sounds logical to me.

Absolutely!  Thanks; I should have figured that one out. :-[
I suppose there is no way of knowing if you have some contaminates…until you taste it in the finished product…is this right?  I had a saison yeast go really funky after a few gens.

What are you planning to make? If it will be in a keg in 3-4 weeks, I say pitch. The baddies shouldn’t be able to keep up with the yeast.

If it’s something that’s going to have an extended secondary/cellaring, I’d be more leery. That’s when an “infection” will take hold.

I think its a moot issue in that the OP was in November

Boy, that’s embarrassing…
