If it hasn’t started collecting fruit flies or other critters I say use it.
It might also depend on how long it was uncovered and at what stage it fell off. Uncovered for a day while fermenting, no problem. Uncovered for 3 or 4 days after the yeast started to settle, I would be less likely to be comfortable using it.
I made the starter last night, so it’s been about 12 hours. I have a feeling that when I shut the door of the room it was in it blew off. I obviously had the foil on too loose. I’ll probably just push back brew day one day and make another one today. Probably money well spent.
My thought is that if your foil was so loose that door wind would knock it off that probably it’s loose enough for wilds to find their way in, even if it didn’t fall off.

I suppose there is no way of knowing if you have some contaminates…until you taste it in the finished product…is this right? I had a saison yeast go really funky after a few gens.
