Someone in my HBC, informed me that the 15 min. steep of the 0 minute hops is like a 20 min. addition and that adds the extra IBU’s.
Unfortunately they told me too late.
So if I brewed that recipe with 78 IBU’s what kind of beer would you call it?
I’m enjoying a couple of this year’s FS Wassail. To me it’s at least 55 ibu and no doubt has a citrus variety, maybe simcoe. I think it’s more of an IPA with dark crystal and chocolate roast.
Yep, alot of the brewery recipes can be tricky to duplicate in terms of hop schedule, because many breweries get a significant number of their IBUs post boil by whirlpooling for extended periods. I agree that 78 IBUs is pretty IPA-ish.
I don’t know how a 15 minute post boil steep could be equivalent to a 20 minute boil addition. In my experience it would be closer to a 5 minute addition, maybe 10 depending on how fast you lose heat in your system.
All I know is when I adjusted the hops to get my IBU’s up to 55, the beer tasted more hoppy then the commercial beer.
If I did it again I’d follow the recipe only adjusting the hops for AA% and not worry about the IBU number that the software spits out.
I really should brew it again.
