Looking to find great home-brew equipment from a great supplier.
A Google search would yield plenty of options.
MoreBeer
Williams
Adventure in homebrewing
Austin Homebrew
Rebel brewer
Northern brewer/Midwest supplies
Plus countless others that sell equipment only
AiH is my LHBS, so they get my vote.
+1 - I use each of these sites pretty regularly and they are all very good.
I’ve used Morebeer, MidwestSupplies, Northern Brewer, Rebel, Keystone Homebrew and Austin Homebrew. Have had excellent experience with all of them.
I buy most of my stuff at my local homebrew supply shop. I’ve known these folks for years and they always treat me well. Kettles and kegs I usually buy online.
I buy local unless I cant
While I appreciate having the option to buy from big players like those listed above, I find that its more important to support your local shop as much as possible. It’s harder to create new brewers if they don’t have a local place or resource to check the hobby out beforehand.
One good thing about these on-line resources is that they help keep everyone honest. You know what the best prices are and your local shop should be somewhere in the ballpark. Do remember to add the cost of shipping and the wait when considering an online retailer. Its not appropriate to point out that Megabrew is selling something for a dollar less and forget that its going to cost way more than a dollar to get it to you!
I get at least half my equipment and 90% of my yeast from High Gravity. The rest split between the usual suspect major online suppliers.
+1 to Jim and Martin.
I buy most of my ingredients from 7 bridges on line but only because they are the only outlet for organic brewing ingredients. anything else I get locally (yeast, nutrients, salts, equipment, etc)
I buy as much of my grain locally as I can from whichever shop gives me the best price. I know the markup on grain is ridiculous but it’s still cheaper to buy locally than order online with shipping. Over the past year I have bought equipment from both AiH and Morebeer and been happy with the service and products.
I’ve had terrible experiences with both Austin Homebrew and Brewmaster’s Warehouse. I know I am not alone in my negative experiences with either.
I always get excellent service from the Grape and Granary in Ohio, in addition to Northern Brewer, MoreBeer, and my LHBS the Grape Grain & Bean. My purchases are pretty even between all of them so I don’t feel too horrible about not always shopping local, etc. – why not support them all! – not to mention that I drive past Northern Brewer in Milwaukee a couple times a year so in a way they could be considered my LHBS as well.
I shop local for grains and some equipment. My most local shop sells beer line at $1 a foot. That is stupid high. All hops are bought online along with the few pieces of new hardware I add from time to time. I’d say I spend 95% of my money locally.
Here is another shout-out to Grape & Granary. I live close enough that I can start a mash, run to the store and get home before the mash is over. The only time I buy anything anywhere else is when Grape & Granary doesn’t carry it. I have used Northern Brewer and Williams before and would not hesitate to buy from either one of them again.
I don’t even live in Akron anymore, but I have shopped at Grape and Granary twice while visiting my folks who do still live in Akron. Like that shop and would definitely frequent if I ever move back to akron
In my early years of homebrewing, I had ordered all of my ingredients and equipment from Midwest and Northern Brewer. However, my adventures led me to the realization that I now don’t have to pay for the huge shipping cost by shopping at two LHBS near me, one of which I now exclusively buy all of my stuff (thanks Grow Masters in Gurnee, IL).
They know me by name and are always very helpful with advice and bargains. There is nothing wrong with buying from the big shops that will ship to you for a premium but I would highly suggest you support your local shop first if you have one close enough to you.
There are several I’d recommend, many of which are not on the list. Lots of good choices out there.
I have ordered stuff from most all of the online major players and had good luck. But I’m a believer in supporting your LHBS if you’re lucky enough to have a good one (and I do) . Mine is Great Fermentations in Indy. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, selection is fresh and great. They sell primarily all Wyeast as their liquid brand, so turnover (on all ingredients) is high, ie., freshness is good. Plus there’s a killer nano next door. Win-win.
I’ll plug my two LHBSs:
Beer-wine hobby in Woburn, MA
Cambridge Homebrew Emporium in Cambridge, MA
I haven’t been to Beer-Wine Hobby in years since I moved to NH…not the easiest place to find. Glad they are still in business.
I’ve found Morebeer to be a lot better since they opened their East Coast facility. I will try to get stuff from my LHBS (A&G Homebrew in Portsmouth) when they have what I need.
