Hi I am new to the homebrewing community and am trying to get out of the beer kits and try to expand into my own styles and such and was curious where to get quality ingredients since I do not live in a very big town and do not have a brew shop. Thanks in advance.
http://www.northernbrewer.com/ and http://www.morebeer.com/ are good places to start. There are many other online retailers that would be good choices but these two are big companies with a broad selection of ingredients and equipment, and have good shipping deals and customer service. Good luck and welcome !
I used to say Northern Brewer but lately I’ve noticed a serious lag in order submit to order ship times. If you pay more they’ll prioritize your order but i’m cheap. So now I recommend Rebel Brewer for the fast order submit to ship times along with low flat rate shipping.
Shipping tends to be cheaper for joints that are closer to you.
Lately, I’ve been digging Adventures In Homebrewing. But More Beer, Northern Brewer, and Williams have all been good to me over the years. I have a fondness for Williams as I think they were my first on-line order oh so many years ago.
Midwest Supplies is out there, too. But they’re owned by NB so essentially the same.
I like Rebel Brewer too, though sometimes their selection is lacking. Worth a shot to check em out though especially if you live in the south east
No one online shop sells all the malts you’ll hear about on here so you may end up shopping at more than one.
I like stores that tell me the brand of malt not just the type. I like Rebel Brewer, More Beer, and Adventures in Homebrewing.
I think Northern Brewer and Midwest are too expensive.
I have used all of those, no problems.
AiH is my local, so I go to one of the actual stores instead of online.
More Beer and AiH are both solid choices. AiH runs a lot of cool deals so when I make big orders I often buy through AiH to capture a good deal.
Several smaller outlets are great for hops. Farmhouse Brewing Supply has a nice hop selection and reasonable pricing. Yakima Valley Hops, Freshhops and Hopsdirect are also good options.
Good point on hops. I just ordered 3 lbs. from Yakima Valley.
Pricing is definitely better going to any one of the ones you listed.
Agreed on all this. I generally use AiH for kegs, Farmhouse, YVH and Hopsdirect for hops (and Hop Heaven as well - the shop is on ebay, FYI), and MoreBeer for grain and yeast. Northern Brewer, Rebel Brewer, Midwest, and Austin Homebrew Supply are all good online retailers as well. I only switched to MoreBeer because they opened up a warehouse on the East Coast, so they are much closer to me.
MoreBeer and AiH in that order. You can’t beat MoreBeer on shipping–free on orders more than $59. And, selection and prices are good.
I order in bulk this time of year:
Yeast bank restock - Farmhouse. Rebel
Hops pellets - Farmhouse, Yakima Valley
Whole Hops - Fresh Hops
Bulk Grains (50 lb) - Morebeer (PA since it is closest to me)
Specialty Grains - Ritebrew
Bulk DME (50 lb) - Farmhouse
These selections have been cultivated the past few years based on quality first for a good/best price.
I love how Yakima valley started packing their hops in resealable mylar bags. I can take an ounce out of a 2 ounce package, squeeze the air out as best I can, ziplock it, and throw it back into the freezer.
If you are doing extract brewing, Williams has the best prices for LME and excellent quality. And flat rate shipping.
Joe-
Have you tried Rite Brew yet?
Yakima Valley is awesome…if you’re on the east coast, it’s gonna’ take a bit to get to you. For stuff like yeast, grain, smaller hop quantities, I buy it all through More Beer.
If you get into kegging, I’ve always ordered through Keg Connection.
I have had good results with
Good Selection and Great Prices and being in Ohio, I get supplies to NC fairly quickly. I buy hops by the pound and specialty malts in a 10 pound. My base 2-row I get at the LHBS, but everything else is labelpeelers.
