I need some suggestions to Hop Up a standard Brown Ale. What hops match that beer style the best but still add that punch? Any help would be great.
Here’s a hoppy American brown that’s won me some awards…
Denny,
What kind of flavor do you get from a Willamette/Chinook combo?
Why, a good flavor, of course!
Chinook makes a really nice finishing hop…based on this recipe I’ve used it to finish in others. A nice kinda piney, resiney, floral thing. The Willamettes are a pretty smooth bittering hop and give a kind of earthy flavor.
Here’s one that I really like.

Notes
An extract version of this Recipe Appeared in Sam Calgione’s book : Extreme Brewing.
I have changed it to all grain and rounded off a few weights for the sake of simplicity.
Also, I added hop additions as the original recipe equaled out to only 22 IBU, yet the beer is listed in the book and on the DFH website as 50 IBU.
I have made Denny’s Noti Brown at least three times, it is awesome
I thought I read in Radical Brewing that Chinook works well with Porters as it pairs nicely with chocolate…could be way off though. Going by memory on a very slow wednesday…
DFH’s India Brown Ale recipe is given in “Extreme Brewing”… don’t have the book for me, but its a great beer and and a pretty simple recipe.
