i think the belma would be most interesting with the fruit contribution. had a local pils here tha’ts highly hopped and has that tropical/citrus finish. can you get mt. hood vs tett? what blend are you considering for your schedule?
Tett and Crystal should work nicely. I would use the crystal late and dry hop with it if you plan to dry hop. There is a beer I make that is not quit an imperial Pils, but uses several of the US noble derivatives - had it at Philly for club night. It had Vanguard for bittering, Santium (Tett derivative) at around 30 minutes and lots of crystal late and dry. Nice beer, very much a big Pilsner, but there was that what is this American hop aroma creeping in thing to it.
I think it would would appeal to the IPA drinker and the classic lager drinker.
I believe a Hallertau is in its lineage as well. Crystal is an interesting hop that varies on how it is used, and I imagine the growing season. I’ve had fruitier versions, and spicier versions.
Yeah, I used the two last year when I tried the Kiwanda cream ale all whirlpool method. Really liked it.
EDIT - It would’ve been out of style for flavor and aroma in a comp, but I had always liked the combo, so I dry hopped an oz (or two ?) of the blend. It was good !
Jeff is on the money. Crystal is like Hallertau with Cascade notes.
Crystal and Tettnanger (real Tettnanger, not US Tettnanger) is a great combo. Crystal, Tettnanger, and Liberty is an even better blend, especially when Tettnanger is used as the flavor hop and Crystal and Liberty are used as aroma hops.
I didn’t have enough Belma so it ended up being crystal and Tett. German, not American. FTR Crystal is one of my favorite American hops. I agree it is like Hallertauer with a touch of cascade.
I need to buy some more Crystal. I bought a 1/2 lb a couple years ago and that was the only time I brewed with it. I liked it quite a bit, but only noticed a spicy Hallertau character (obvious reasons) but not the touch of Cascade. Could’ve been seasonal or terroir differences.
