Oatmeal in a Whiskey Barrel Stout

Hello everyone,

I am new to brewing, and this will be my second brew ever. My girlfriend and I decided to brew a whiskey barrel stout from the ingredients we got in a Brewer’s Best ingredient kit. I recently read that adding oatmeal to a stout is great, and will really help the mouthfeel and creaminess.

The ingredients I have for the mash include 6oz of roasted barley, 8oz of dark chocolate and 8oz of caramel 90L. I plan on making a 5 gallon batch. How much oatmeal should I add to the grain bag?

Additionally, I was going to use steal cut oats (cook them first). Is this recommended, or should I use another type of oatmeal?

I would also like to hear your input on oatmeal in stouts and porters.

Cooked steel cut oatmeal will work.  Your beer may end up noticeably cloudy because the dissolved starch will form a haze, but may not be noticeable if your beer is dark enough.  8 oz is a reasonable amount.

Flaked oats work well too.  You can just mash them.

My opinion on oats in stouts and porters?  If it tastes good do it!
