My local beer shop (Liquorama, in Upland, California) had six packs of this in stock, the first time I have ever seen it in SoCal. I have always wanted to try Pfriem Pilsner, because I’ve seen it on multiple lists of great beers, and I have even brewed a clone recipe of it from Carpenter’s Lager book.
Hands down, Pfriem Pilsner is an absolutely stellar beer. I am usually fairly skeptical of the descriptions posted in reviews or brewery ad copy, but this is one where they actually undersold the beer a bit. It really does have an amazing aroma of fresh grass and lemon, and the malt flavor is just a spectacular. The head on the pour from the can was tall and had fine bubbles, with ridiculously long head retention. I am envious of those who have it as a local beer! It is absolutely exquisite.
I’ll be darned. I live in NorCal but have family in Upland and I go there all the time. I’m going back down in a few days so please leave me a six pack of Pfriem Pilsner at Liquorama!!
When I’m down there I make a point to stop at Bourbon Street Liquor off Mountain Ave because they have a great selection of Enegren lagers, which are also stellar.
It’s definitely in the ballpark…in my most recent version, I used all of the appropriate hop varieties and it turned out awesome. I wish I could do a side-by-side, but that’s not possible right now. Guess I just have to brew more (and hope that the local store continues to carry the commercial version so I can compare directly).
Thank you, Mr. Farke, for indeed leaving me a six pack of pFriem pilsner! Two, actually!
Next time, I’ll take a whole pallet. It is every bit as good as I have heard it to be. Outstanding. Also picked up a six pack of pFriem Lager (very simply named), which I actually like better than their pilsner.
These are easily the most authentic German-style beers I have had outside of Germany.
I remember going to pFriem back in 2014 on my first trip to Oregon and not liking the beers at all. People here and elsewhere said I was nuts. A few years later I ran into more of their beers and they are all stellar. Some of the best pilsners brewed in the US. Their sour beers are also amazing.
