Really old grain?

So about 15-16 months ago I went to brew a beer with some buddies across the Delaware in New Jersey. The homebrew shop there would only sell grain by the pound so I ended up with some excess Amber Malt, Caramel Malt, and Smoked Malt (I tried a smoked gourd Brown Ale… came out pretty poor haha). It’s been sitting at room temperature in plastic baggies at my buddies house until now when he dropped it off.

Should I try to brew with it or is that asking for issues?

Uncracked I should add.

Should be fine.

Plastic baggies can be an issue if there was condensation or moisture  … otherwise you should be OK.

I would brew with them. If you notice any stale taste, let us know. I would be interested if stored grain that has been cracked would be fine or stale.

Cheers,

Milled grain has a reduced shelf life. I think Briess recommends 6 months on their pre-milled grain.
