Just stumbled on this. BeerBug has anyone used it.
$200 for something like this doesn’t really make sense for me. If you have a well defined process and temp control I really see no need to track my beer 's progress every minute of the day
Nifty technology, but it’s useless for me so I haven’t tried it.
I know right.
Was looking for some homebrewing gifts and this was on a list I saw online. Thought it was a cool idea but like you said pretty useless.
I actually think it’s pretty cool, but it isn’t compatible with my fermentors.
We have one for the KCBM Competition’s Mead BOS prize. Seems like it is more useful for mead and wine making than brewing. That said, I hope I win it so I can try it out! [emoji14]
Darn…not for the Cider BOS?
If it was 25-50 then I would probably buy it, but beyond that I’m not really interested.
I bought one at the 2015 NHC and think it is pretty cool technology. Whether it’s worth $200 to monitor your fermentations from anywhere, is totally a personal decision. I also bought the optional external temperature probe which measures wort temps from deep inside the wort. I must say that among the batches I have used it on, there have been a couple of times where I’ve seen temperature changes on the BeerBug which alerted me to temp control issues which I was able to adjust.
It does have quirks. My Bug developed a battery charging issue which the developers quickly repaired. I’m also a teensy tiny bit concerned that if the company were to fail, the lack of its cloud service to collect data would render the BeerBug pretty useless.
Here is the current Saison I have my BeerBug on. (Yes, I ramp my Saisons up into the upper 80’s). It’s completely done and I don’t have the external probe plugged in on this batch, but it’ll give you an idea of what you can monitor remotely.

I have been using one for almost three years now, and really like it.
Customer service has been very good (even got an email reply day after christmas).
It is pretty easy to use and I for one… really like being able to check on my beers while I am away… really helps in timing when to allow the temps to free-rise based on gravity.
Overall, I think I just love being able to check on it without opening the fermenter, and also being able to do it while I am checking E-mails on my phone (for the umptheenth time that day)
It is a toy, and not something I would buy as a means to make my beer better, but it has upped the amount of enjoyment I get out of brewing.
I guess the best way to rate it… if my beer bug died today, I would have one in the mail in the next few weeks.
I like mine, however it never seems to stay accurate after high krausen dies down. It seems to get “stuck” at a certain gravity reading, and my best guess is that it is from some of the dried krausen weighing the little weight device down
