The Champagne of Beers

I sat down last night to peruse the latest issue of Zymurgy, and on page 11, under Beer Brand Trivia, this caught my eye:

“Miller High Life was introduced in 1903, a time when bottled beer was uncommon. Clear glass was used to display the beer’s clarity, another standout feature. Marketing strategies changed over the years, and High Life went from being a luxury brand to a working man’s drink, but at one point the beer was bottled in actual champagne bottles; in 2018 it was spun as The Champagne of Beers, and the name struck for quite some time.”

I can assure you that the High Life label has had the words “Champagne of Beers” on it for quite some time before 2018.

I think I remember it as “The Champagne of Beers” in the 1960s - maybe the 1950s.

I can, without doubt, attest to the fact that the words “Champagne of Beers” were on those labels in the late 70’s because that is what I drank!! Among many other labels too!!

At the Miller High Life website, they note: “In the early 1900s, most Americans enjoyed their beer in a saloon or taken home in bucket. As a market developed for “bottle beer,” Miller Brewers crafted a crisp, refreshing, effervescent flagship beer. Within three years, the new beer earned the nickname “The Champagne of Bottle Beer.””

I wonder if it was a typo and was supposed to say 1918?

Anyway, now I can’t resist sharing my Halloween costume this year:
