The title is pretty self explanatory. I took the BJCP tasting exam in August last year and everything I read says 3-4 months to get results back. It’s been 8 months now. Any ideas what the holdup is? The exam appears on the BJCP site, but without scores. Thanks.
Sometimes there are delays, though that would be 8 months which is the longest I’ve heard of. 3-4 is what they’re going for but it seems 4-5 months is normal.
Contact your exam admin and ask about the delay.
I think you mean August 2014, not 2013. If 2013 then it is probably a glitch in the system.

There are a couple of things that are holding up exams. I’d say that it should be down to less than 4mths, though there are some outliers based on sets. The change to the new report to participant has shaved about a month off of an exam set. The biggest issue that I’ve seen is that the actual number of graders needs to grow. There are a lot of people who grade, but not consistently. If more graders would grade 4-5 times/year, it would help immensely. But, it’s also a volunteer organization, so it has it’s challenges as a result of that. The good news is that it’s getting better. The bad news is that it still needs to cut another 4-6 weeks off, but there’s only so much that can be done to help with that. Which exam did the OP take?

Looking forward to taking the June tasting exam. Hopefully I will know my results before the 2016 winter to spring circuit happens, but I won’t sweat it if it takes longer. By taking a class with a very knowledgable beer judge and hearing feedback from those with whom I have judged this spring, I am comfortable judging with whatever rank I achieve, if any…I have learned that I perceive what I perceive and just put it down in writing for the benefit of the brewer and roll on. The really advanced judges are best at quickly articulating what they perceive and drawing conclusions from that to suggest corrective action. I am getting better at the suggested corrective actions and I tried to still do that with the NHC shorthand scoring sheet when possible.
I would not expect the graders to give up time to do the tasting judge review quickly - they still have a life and are probably tied up in a way that prevents them from going forward to complete the grading any quicker. I feel your pain on the delay, but everyone involved is a volunteer and I volunteer for a lot of different things in many areas, so I appreciate that a person can be pulled in many directions.
Just my 2 lincoln’s and I could be persuaded to think differently, but put yourself in the shoes of the graders and look at what else they may have on their plate and the volunteer in me says cut them some slack…let’s hope we can all have a quicker and more responsive scoring system, but realize that the number of graders needs to increase. If you can someday grade exams, please volunteer to do so.
The fortunate part is that long delays like this are outliers, just as there are some exams that are turned around in 2-3 months. You just usually don’t see people posting online about how quickly their exam came back (I administered an exam set in Jan. that took only 3 months to get the grades back). No matter what people are talking about, you tend to see more complaints online than positives. It obviously sucks to be part of an outlier on the slow end of things, so hang in there OP.
Just finished up grading an exam that was taken on 2/28. We sent the EGF and RTPs to the AD on 4/20. Hopefully those people will have their exams back soon!

If it’s the January one, it’s moving along. I’m the Associate Director on it.
That’s ideally how it should happen. As long as the AD is on top of it and gets it to the ED and the ED finishes reporting, it should be good to go.
and it’d be faster than that if you could stop gardening for a few minutes! And also if your 2nd grader had been less pedantic, but, mostly the first.
Hahaha. Yes, tending the garden was much more appealing than grading exams indoors on most days. Even with that, we were only 3 days behind the RTP goal! [emoji14]
