unibroue mixed pack, all their classics - seems much worse than my memory of it

unibroue was the single company that made me realize that beer can be something to really savour.

i used to drink a lot of their stuff.

haven’t had it in forever, but picked up a big mixed pack with all their usual suspects the other day. very disappointed. maybe it’s my taste that has changed, but all their beers feel like they have a dull, almost stale issue with metallic overtones a la industrial beers. i know they got bought out by sleemans, then sapporo years ago. i wonder where and how they’re made nowadays.

maudite was straight up bland, tasted like a super basic discount strong ale without any real defining characteristics at all other than their in your face yeast. won’t get into the rest, but all tasted slightly metallic and like they’d been stored really poorly. bleh.

But, assuming your tasting is accurate, is it the brewery or the retailer who’s to blame? I buy Fin du Monde frequently and it’s always in great condition.

im being absolutely truthful, but had a fin du monde tonight, first one of the mixed pack.

it tasted excellent, body was excellent. it felt completely different from all the other beers in the pack.

don’t even know what to make of that.

Maybe your memory is off?

FWIW I pretty much always thought this about their beers. The last time I recall buying any of their beers was when Terrible first came out, which I didn’t love but didn’t think it was Terrible.

Was the pack canned or bottled?

I haven’t drank much of there stuff since Sleeman/Sapporo, but have snagged a few bottles and hadn’t noticed it falling off. I still have a couple of bottles of Quelque Chose in storage.

dont really get what you mean, i stated that the fin du monde of the pack was excellent. the others ranged from ho-hum to okay, with mechanical/metallic notes being an issue in them (not fin du monde).

having finished the 12 pack with 2 of each i confirmed this in them.
i think the blanche du chambly was okay, without those metally issues though.

341ml bottled with twist off tops. crazily enough we barely get any selection/choice from them here in ontario, so i grabbed the mixed pack. we dont get any of their 750ml sizes anymore. the only other choice of theirs is a canned blanche du chambly which i do get about once a month or so. its a distinctly solid wit, but not mind-blowing.

i stand by my tastings and descriptions as i stated them, but wish i could have more opportunity to try their stuff like i used to be able to.

la terrible was distinctly unimpressive for a 10% quad and a beer they seem to have included in their core lineup.
