Water Chemistry Profiles

This is a question I’m sure has come up before but I haven’t found a good answer.

Is there a source or reference someplace that has beer styles and suggested water profiles for each style?

I’m looking for water profiles by style, not by area or city. Its one thing to know Pilsen’s water profile - but that doesn’t mean brewers there are not adjusting their water. Right?

I appreciate any reference. I have the Water book, admittedly haven’t read all of it and the chemistry and calculations. I didn’t see a table or list of profiles.

Thanks guys

The best resource is brunwater. It suggests profiles based on color and flavor. In my experience, that’s how I’ve gotten the best results.

Tables 18 and 19 in the Water book have what you are looking for in terms of suggested water profiles for various styles (e.g., a profile with suggested chemistries for blonde ale, etc.).

Mike Conant has a slide deck (available here) that summarizes everything in a table, also.

And of course, Bru’n Water is another good reference (I use BeerSmith to do my calculations – they have a water library, also, but I don’t find it as handy as the actual tables available out there; that said, I like that I can keep all of my grain/pH/water calculations in a single program; note that you have to watch the settings in BeerSmith to make sure it does the pH approximations “correctly”).

I use Beersmith and it comes with a library of water profiles that includes by style. I also imported some of the profiles from Brewers Friend into Beersmith.

i use brun’water, but it all takes dialing in step by step just like everything in homebrewing. also get a <10gram accurate scale for measurements as teaspoons and stuff are just not there.

at first i was eager to do all these water profiles but tbh these days i keep it really simple and just stick with additions i know wont end up weird.
