Weyermann Barke Munich?

Hi everybody. I am brewing a dunkel soon and have a bag of Weyermann Barke Munich (6-8°L). I usually make dunkels with 99% Weyermann Munich Type 2 (8-10°L), based off Kai’s dunkel recipe.

Will the Barke Munich lack the flavor or robustness of the Type II?

Does anyone have experience with the Barke Munich? How does it compare to the Type II?

I haven’t used the Barke, but the regular Weyermanns, and Type 1 definitely has a lighter touch (drier, nuttier, less caramel and stone fruit?) than Type 2. It would add another dimension if you blended with something to give that “heft.”  But on it’s own I think you’ll get something more like a Märzen.  BTW ever try the Bohemian Dark?  Same 6ish color, even less caramel & fruit IMO.

Barke anything is typically darker in color and richer in flavor than its standard counterpart. Barke pils, Vienna, and Munich malts are all dynamite.

You mate want to sub in a portion of Pils for your Dunkel. 85/15 Barke Munich/Barke Pils will be very tasty I’m sure.

Their specs show the same color ratings for the Barke and non-specific products.  Do they really brew up darker?  Anyway  you’ve made me sad I just bought a bag of regular Weyermann Pilsner.  Want to run through it quickly and try the Barke!

Last I knew, Barke Munich was around 9 °L

Right, just noticed that.  Pils and Vienna show same color ratings – so same color, richer flavor?

Yup. Just better malts.

Jon where do you get your Barke?

I had my LHBS order it for me. Long time customer there.

Thanks for the help, i’ll give the Barke Munich a go.

Way to do it!  Establish a relationship, support a small business,  and avoid paying shipping!

I figured you would say that. Traveling to Indy on the 20th. I was hoping maybe GF stocked it. Guess I’ll buy the next best.

Nope, they don’t carry it unfortunately. Nice enough to special order though.
