What can I brew with this?

Hi all —

I’m feeling kind of dumb. I have a pound of Briess Carapils, a pound of Great Western Crystal 15, and a pound of Rahr Wheat Malt White sitting with my brewing stuff. And I cannot for the life of me find the recipe that I bought them for. I am not experienced enough to know what I could do with these, so I thought I’d ask here.

I can do a BIAB session, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to put these to good use, I’d love to learn. Thanks in advance!

Do you have any hops on hand?

Clarifying question – do you want to use the full amount up in your recipe, or are you OK with using just a portion of each? What size batch are you brewing? Are you going to have a base malt, or extract, to round out the grist?
With some 2-row or pilsner, you could use these to make a decent blonde ale or kolsch-style ale (but for a 5-gallon batch, I would only use ~8 oz. each max of the carapils or crystal 15; just my personal taste).

Yeah, I left some details out, didn’t I?

  1. I have no hops on hand, but they are fairly quick to arrive if I order them.
  2. I could use the full amount of these grains or partial. I don’t have any preference on the batch size. I don’t have any base malt or DME hanging around (but those can also arrive quickly after being ordered).

Thanks again for your suggestions and clarifying questions!

Briess’ website says their carapils is ”devoid of enzymes” & ditto for crystal malt; so only the wheat malt will have any conversion power.

One pound of wheat malt will get you to 3% ABV in a one gallon batch. So you could do a BIAB, “Just Nine Bottles” femto-brew:

  • 1lb wheat

  • 2 oz carapils

  • 2 oz crystal

  • Whatever hops

  • Whatever yeast

My thoughts: How about get some base malt, some more Wheat malt and brew an American Wheat Ale (Maybe a Pacific Ale featuring Galaxy hops).

1.047
24 IBU

45% Wheat
45% Pale malt (aka “2-row”)
5% CaraPils
5% C15
12 IBU Galaxy at top of boil
12 IBU Galaxy mid boil
End of boil = Same qty Galaxy as mid boil

American Ale Yeast

.5 to 1oz per gallon Galaxy dry hop for three days, three days before packaging.

Other single hop options could be Nectaron, El Dorado, Mosaic, Amarillo, etc.

If you want multi hops:
12 IBU clean bittering at top of the boil (Warrior, Magnum, etc)
12 IBU split evenly across Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo (or other fav combos) mid boil
End of Boil = Same qty of each of mid boil hops

Dry hop with .5 or more of all hops used mid boil for three days, three days before packaging.

Those grains can be stored for a while and you could use them as the need comes up. I can’t see using all three in full in a single beer.

Thank you, everyone. I have some ideas and direction now. I will report back on the results.
