what category for BJCP 2015 style guidelines?

So I made a Lemongrass Hefeweizen. I did use american hops instead of german and I used safbrew wb-06 yeast.  What category should I put it in for 2015 BJCP style guidelines competition? Does it go in 1D or 10A?  I’m new to competitions and my past entries were easy to figure out where to go.

Yowser… that’s truly a 34C Experimental if ever I heard of one.

harpoon brewery in massachusetts makes one and magichat makes one too.

This seems tailor-made for 30A (2015 SHV).  It does not require you to list a classic style, but just the style you were going for.  You could list it as an American Hefeweizen with Lemongrass.  That being said, Dave’s point about 34C does have some validity.  I’ve seen a lot of judges struggle without a classic style to reference as the base.

The thing that throws it into 34C as far as I’m concerned is the American hops.  If it tastes like American hops at all, then it’s not a true German hefeweizen base anymore, but rather an amalgamation of maybe three different styles!?  I don’t know if it’s okay to say “German hefe with lemongrass AND American hops”.  Hops are probably not the herb or spice that 30A is looking for.  And with a traditional German wheat beer yeast in there, it’s not an American hefe either.

+1

“Lemongrass Hefeweizen with American hops”

If it’s close to one of the production beers you mentioned you could enter it a clone beer (34A) as well.  If the lemongrass blends into the hops enough you could maybe enter it as a mixed-style (34B) German-American Wheat.  In the end it really boils down to what style you think the flavor profile fits best.

thanks for the input, Im glad I didnt enter it in those 2 categories I mentioned.

I forgot to post a picture of this brew. Here it is  (photo taken by my friend is a hobby photographer but is excellent at it)

Looks good enough to drink!

funny that homebrews are always good enough to drink

my thoughts as well, cheers!

How noticeable does the lemongrass come through?

its comes through a lot.  the brew has a bite to it and that bite is from the lemongrass.

How is that yeast?

I used Safbrew WB-06

Yep. How is it?

never used it before so I dont have anything to compare to it but it worked well for me in this brew.
