When to change glycol

I see people talking about changing the glycol in their chillers. I’ve been using mine for at least 6 years and have never done it. So, if you change your glycol, how often do you do it? How do you know when it’s time?

From what I know, all you really need to worry about is the concentration of glycol and you can do that with a hydrometer.

It does have a tendency to break down. That said, most breweries I have been involved with just check the °P and add when needed rather than replace. As long as it isn’t dirty or causing problems with your pumps I’d say you are good to go.

Thanks, man. Kinda figured that if I wasn’t having problems it was OK, but I see enough people kind of arbitrarily changing it that I didn’t know for sure.

I see this as being no different than the antifreeze in our cars — which is also a form of glycol. We only add more if we need to and we don’t replace it unless there is some sort of blockage and a flush is required. Aside from this, let it alone.
