Whisk(e)y Cocktails

Anyone?

I love beer, of course. But I also love a great, well thought out cocktail. Lately, my go tos have been whiskey based.

Old Fashioned - possibly the greatest drink ever
Manhattan - of course
Whiskey sour - perfect summer cocktail
Paper (air)Plane - a whiskey sour for the highfalutin
Sazerac - perfection in a glass
Mint Julep - I can’t get inspired more than once a year
Boulvardier - a whiskey Negroni, I can get on board with that
Rusty Nail - Hmm. I need to be in a bad mood to enjoy this drink. ,

Any other favorite whiskey cocktails?

If you insist on a particular BRAND or TYPE of whiskey, please explain why.

The Smoking Gun. Laphroig (or other Islay scotch), Fernet Branca, burnt sugar syrup, barrel aged bitters. It’s a great digestive.

Sazerac: Rye, sugar cube or simple syrup, Peychaud’s bitters, aromatic bitters, twist of lemon. Calssic.

Edit: I somehow missed Sazerac was listed in OP. I wish I could see other posts while typing a reply. And I forgot the Absinthe wash.

I love Rusty Nails (but then I love Drambuie). It’s my first choice when I’m at a hotel bar at a conference. I usually have to move on to my second choice after explaining what Drambuie is.

Sazaracs are delicious and also evoke memories of some of the nicest hotel bars I’ve cooled my heels at after a long day of conference politicking, including and especially the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

The Sazerac is such a simple and perfect recipe. And the touch of color from the Peychaud’s makes it looks so damn good in a glass. Just yum.

The Paper Plane is another favorite of mine, but I like them more bourbon forward then the traditional recipe. Instead of equal parts bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino liqueur and lemon juice (a combination I find a bit too sweet), I have been making them 2 parts Bourbon, 1 part each Aperol and liqueur and 1/2-part fresh lemon juice. I enjoy them as a classic martini or in a rocks glass over ice. Great either way.
