would you use it

Bought a package of WLP 011 about two weeks ago.  Went to put it in a starter today and as I squeezed the package up and down to mix it, it started to squirt out of the package.  Upon closer examination, I saw that the top of the package was split open.  Safe to use, or toss it?

Toss it.

Did it split as you smacked it or as you were opening it?  Or do you think the split was there prior?

+1.  Not worth all the effort to use it. Get more yeast.

There is no smacking with White Labs.  They used to package in tubes, my preference.  There was a 1/16 of an inch or smaller break in the seam on the top of the package.  I only noticed it when I squeezed it to mix the yeast within.

Whoops, sorry. I thought it was a wyeast pack. My bad.

The inner bladder used in the new white labs packaging is pretty thick. It would take some rough handling to punch a hole in there. Was it the seem that failed?

Yes. The seam split.  Wish they would go back to the tubes.

With  breach in the seam I’m not sure if any yeast got sucked back into the package.

Is it just me or are the new WL packs somewhat of a PITA?  I can’t seem to open one now without it splashing someplace other than the intended wort.

I really don’t like them…

I’m fifty/fifty on ease of use, but I like the benefits that come with them.

Yeah, I now have to keep some sanitised scissors handy on brewday following an incident where I tried to open a pack without and ended up wearing the yeast…

I have never had an issue with them, but I miss the ease of keeping the vial and using as a slant…
