My second time using the White Labs pouch.
I cut the top off, and when I went to dump it into the
fermenter the inner pouch slid out, and sunk to the bottom.
At the time I didn’t realize that there was an inner pouch.
I took a peak today when I got home from work and it’s floating on top.
What’s curious is it looks like it’s starting to ferment. Maybe I cut it open.
Now I’m off to sanitize a spoon and some scissors.
Maybe I’ll email White Labs and let them know.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Didn’t fall in but only because I cut open the packet on an angle. Surprised when nothing came out…but then realized there was an inner packet. Wasn’t a huge deal for me, but I can certainly see how your problem could happen on the first try. Would be nice to know for the first use.
I haven’t had that issue, but I’ve had trouble getting the yeast out of the tube. Just cutting it and squeezing it out like toothpaste is not as easy as it would seem… Only used them once, but it was not a fun experience.
Not a fan of the new packaging at all. It is hard to get all the yeast out of that small package. Knowing these packs suck IMO, I cut the outer seal off and went to town like it’s a shake weight. Maybe try that next time, then you’ll know how much yeast was left behind or prevent it from sliding out of the outer seal into your wort.
I really like the new white lab pure pitch packaging. I shake vigorously, then cut along the dashed line on the package, then pour. I squeeze the pouch between my fingers to get any remnants out.
I have always found the new packs to be really fresh (based on lag time) regardless of package date.
I like it too. I take the inner pouch out and squeeze from the bottom. never leave any more behind than Wyeast’s packaging.
Glad I read this. I have one in the fridge waiting for Saturday.
LHBS only carries WL. I did the same thing, but it fell on the floor. Yeast gone, glad I had dry in the fridge. I like the new package fine I guess.
The new package could be quite useful if you sell yeast because of the new dimensions and weight savings.
This might be a useful video for people who haven’t used the packaging before.
I can’t believe it takes a video to open and pour White Labs Pure Pitch.
Yeah I was surprised when I saw that in my recommended feed on youtube also.
I like the new packs fine. Bag within a bag is actually better once I realized this was the case. Now I can see how loose the yeast is before I cut it open.
THIS! I was not happy the first time this happened to me. Some yeasts are easier than others, my last batch of Vermont Ale yeast was a nightmare.
WLP 002 can be like squeezing a tube of toothpaste.
When I did my pitch last night, I used two small rods and pulled it through. It removed everything from the packet. I like the new packs. Some of the yeasts were so packed in the old tube. No spewing with the new pack is nice. Can’t say that for the Imperial can I pitched for the split batch. [emoji47]
My usual strategy is to carefully remove the outer package, shake the heck out of the inner package, sanitize it, open it, and squeeze it in using the “toothpaste” method.
I slightly preferred the test tubes for ease of pitching, but I also worried a little more about contamination with them (in case something hitched onto the rim of the container), but that’s probably mostly paranoia. I do like that the new style packaging is less material and more compact, though!
