2011 Gold Winning Strong Ale - Hey! That's My Beer's Name!

Just got the Zymurgy with the NHC winners in the mail today.  Looking at the winning recipes is always fun, and a good place for ideas.

I did a double take when I saw the title of the Category 19 winner - “Creative Destruction Barleywine”.  Hey - that was my beer’s  name!

Looking at the malt bill and hop times and rates, it was very similar.  Gravity was kicked up a notch, or 2.

I am flattered and humbled at the same time.  Very cool.  Very cool indeed.

nice jeff! I have been noodling around a new ABW recipe to make early next year that incorporates most of those ingredients (especially the hops), but instead I may just use your recipe since its obviously a great one!

That’s awesome. Congrats Jeff!

Really cool Jeff

That’s a great name. I’m calling mine Big Dump, since it’s brewed first thing in the spring and put away for the following winter.

It has to do with reading “Age of Turbulence” by Alan Greenspan about when I brewed that beer.  Adam Smith originated the term, of course.  Lots to things get used up in a Barleywine, to create something new, hence the name.

There are a few others I use.

“Sub-Prime Pilsner”.  Bronze at the NHC this year.

“Irrational Exuberance” for the Imperial IPA’s we brew.  No medals for those.
