Anyone have a Kalamazoo Stout clone? or ideas?

I’ve been wanting to clone this beer for a couple years now.  Haven’t found a reputable clone recipe.  I’m not good at cloning beers, either.  The only thing I know is that they use “brewers licorice”.  But how much and how long, I’m at a loss.

This is a great beer, I’d love to be able to brew something like it.  Anyone tried cloning it?  Or something similar to it?

Is Star Anise the same thing as brewers licorice like I’ve read?  I really don’t like anise, but I love me some Kalamazoo Stout! ;D

go with 3/4 of a stick of brewers licorice, add it early to the boil so it will dissolve,

I had a former brewer look it over and it was close.

I’ve used Candisyrup D90 in a stout and it gave it a wonderful licorice flavor.

star anise is NOT the same as brewers licorice. anise seed is often used to simulate licorice flavour though. I don’t know what’s in the brewers licorice, it could be made with anise seed. I believe star anise is a botanically distinct creature from anise seed.

July/August 2003 Zymurgy had a bunch of Bell’s recipes.  I do not know if Kalamazoo Stout was on the list.

But that’s where my Third Coast Old Ale recipe came from.  10 gallons are aging in my basement right now.

They are indeed different beast you are correct Mort. Anise or Fennel tastes like black licorice. Star Anise is like a Christmas/Chai Tea type spice.
