I’ll be in Austin this weekend (Thursday through Monday) visiting family. My daughter is currently studying at Southwestern University, and the rest of us are turning the visit into a bit of a road trip.
On a previous visit, we stopped by Jester King Brewery, and it was a great experience overall. We ended up chatting with the staff, and they even gave us a membership cards for their Christmas party, which was a really nice, unexpected touch and left a good impression.
As far as beer goes, I usually lean more toward lagers, pilsners, wheat beers, stouts, and Belgian or seasonal styles. I don’t mind an IPA here and there, but I much prefer places where you can sample a variety of beers without everything being hop-forward.
I’d love to hear suggestions for another Austin-area brewery that locals would recommend, especially for someone who appreciates balance and variety over hop-heavy menus.
Cheers Merry Christmas to all the members of the Homebrewers Association!
Live Oak Brewing in Bastrop makes some fine German styles and I can highly recommend. Austin Beer Garden Brewery (ABGB) makes really good beer too. Both of these breweries are worth visiting and especially ABGB when they’ve got a band playing.
Another that you might consider is Hold Out Brewing near downtown Austin. That’s an eclectic setting in a funky part of town. Their beer was very enjoyable.
I’ll second Live Oak, located by the airport, the address is 1615 Crozier Ln
Del Valle, TX 78617.
ABGB is a favorite, lovely Helles and a variety of Pilsners. Good Pizza and sandwiches.
Meanwhile is south of TX-71, another good lager brewery with lots of other beers. Big outdoor space that is popular with families. Several food trucks.
Holdout is fun and has eclectic varieties.
Pinthouse Pizza is popular, but IPA focused.
8 days ago we had lunch at LeRoy and Lewis BBQ. Best BBQ I’ve had in a long time. The place has a well deserved Michelin Star. Didn’t even look at the beer list as we were flying at 2:30, check online.
