I love living here in Hawaii. Wouldn’t trade it for anything, but man I sure miss boiled peanuts! Boiled peanuts, done right, are made with green peanuts. When I ask for green peanuts here in Hawaii people look at me like I’m lolo.
World Series… football season… good beer… and boiled peanuts made from … dried peanuts? Yuck!
We do have edamame (fresh green soy beans in the pod) here. They make a passable substitute. But man I shore do miss dem boiled peanuts bout dis time a year.
I’ve had some bad ones. They must have come from a can or were made from roasted peanut in th shell. If edamame pale in comparison then I must try the real thing!
Have you tried the canned boiled peanuts? I have not. I’m sure they’re not the same as fresh. I thought I’d had boiled peanuts until I looked them up. :-\
I’m not sure what kind of peanuts we usually get when we go to NC, but they are definitely not wet. They are shelled and missing the reddish seed coat, lightly salted if at all, and not like the roasted peanuts we get here in the NW (they’re somewhat harder). Delicious.
Now edamame - that stuff is awesome. We eat it all of the time, my kids love it too. I can pack some frozen ones in their lunch and they munch them at school. Of course they’ll eat them when they’re frozen too, and frozen peas as well. Kids are funny.
I used to buy green peanuts by the 10# crate at the farmers’ market in Central Florida. Green meaning freshly picked - not actually green in color.
Fill a stock pot with water. Add peanuts (in the shell) so that about 1/3 of the pot is water underneath the peanuts (green peanuts float). Boil for 2 hours
Add 1# of salt and mix well
boil another hour
turn off the heat
when the peanuts sink to the bottom they are done.
Absolute ambrosia and highly addictive!
Very much a Southern thing
If you are in the South in the fall, chances are you’ll see someone selling them at a roadside stand - probably boilin’ up a pot full right there on a cajun cooker. Ask if they are made from green peanuts. If they are, give em a try. Roadside boiled peanut stands are a southern tradition.
The one’s I had were slimy shriveled and not salty, so they mustn’t have been handled very well. It was at a festival when I tried them. They were nothing like what I just saw online.
You like 'em or you don’t. I don’t. I grew up in FL too and Punatic’s right. You see folks boiling them by the roadside everywhere. But I’ve never liked 'em at all.
On the other hand, I got my first keggle from a guy who’d made it to sell boiled peanuts. Still have it.
I love 'em, but they sure are sloppy to try to eat while driving. I had some cajun style from a stand on a drive across Florida that were particularly addicting. I had to wash myself and the car when I got back.
I love boiled peanuts.I get them from the Jamaicans quite a bit.
We were getting raw peanuts from the Korean grocery store a lot and boiling them ourselves. They haven’t had them lately, cant figure out why and haven’t asked. I figured maybe there was a raw peanut shortage.
Boiled peanuts is one of the primary food groups in SC (they sell them at the moonshiner’s reunion for those of you that are coming - big styrofoam cup for $3).
