I frequent public lands near my place,
and am often amazed by the amount of brass piled up
amid slaughtered tv’s and fridgerators, broken glass and neon clays.
I picked up a handful this morning.
Wondered if anyone could name off all the sizes here.
4 or 5 types.
The bigger brass ones have me stumped.
These boys drink natty light BTW.
Short aluminum looks like .45ACP.
The two small rimfire/rimmed ones are .22 Magnum and .22 long rifle (the smallest).
The two dark grey medium sized ones look like steel case 7.62x39 (the classic Soviet AK/SKS round, common for plinking these days).
Other ones are some kind of rifle round that I can’t identify by sight, but I bet it says on the face…if people are cranking out rounds, maybe its .308, aka 7.62x51 NATO? Somebody with a Garand or FAL, perhaps. If its just a bolt action hunting rifle there are any number of cartridges that all look very, very similar but have slight differences probably not terribly visible from a photo.
Ahhh, never mind, those aren’t 308…compared to the 7.62x39 it looks more like a .22-.270 sized hunting cartridge I think. Wasn’t comparing for scale.
Ahhh, maybe its just .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO? Seems most likely.
EDIT: Yep that’s my vote. 22Mag, 22LR, .45ACP, 7.62x39, and .223Rem.

All they have on the face is LC 60 ?
I was thinking 223, but it has been a while since I have seen them. Are they really that small?

Bet its LC for Lake City, just a few miles from where I live. Ammunition factory for the military. I shoot at the public range over there.
.223 is fun, very little recoil that’s for sure, at least compared to the full bore rifle stuff. Not cheap though…of course hardly any ammo is these days.
EDIT: the 60 appears to be date of manufacture with Lake City. Could either be old surplus from 1960, or just as likely some remanufactured civilian ammo made with the old brass.

The brand on the 7.62X39 was WOLF…there were numerous empty boxes of that laying around…maybe that is a cheap round?
Yeah, Wolf is a cheap source of ammo. The rifle ammo is Russian made usually (steel casing, instead of brass, kind of interesting, but a Kalashnikov would feed it if it was made of anything, brass, steel, plastic, balsa wood, blancmange…), and they make decent shotshells out of Germany I’ve bought quite a few of.
everytime I shoot Wolf ammo, I swear I spend twice as long cleaning my weapons.
+1, I won’t even use it anymore.
edit: Although I’m only talking about 5.56 through an AR-15. I’m sure there are weapons and calibers in which dirty ammo isn’t really a concern at all. The price premium for something like Prvi Partizan in 5.56 isn’t much either.

My Taurus 9mm was always pleased as punch with Wolf. Dirty, but happy.
my 1911 is happy to feed wolf all day long. (I’m pretty certain Fletch has tuned that thing to shoot high powered pebbles.)
I just hate the amount of crud that I’ve got to keep hitting with cleaner.
My Springfield would probably work fine with it too, but I’m with you, Brew. I really don’t like cleaning and in a handgun I don’t feel like decent ammo carries too much of a premium, at least in bulk.
