So I noticed on MoreBeer they are selling dry packs of lager yeast from CellarScience and they are Very inexpensive. I’ve always been a fan of White Labs yeast and I’m currently using their Mexican lager yeast and loving the results for my light lagers.
My question is have any of you guys used this new CellarScience lager yeast? In your experience how does it compare to other yeast manufacturers? Would it make it into your normal rotation? Would you use it for competitions?
I tried the CellarScience Cali Yeast. Quality wise it was fine. Of course, this doesn’t answer the question about their lager yeasts. But, I would say it’s low risk to try them.
PS. There German yeast says it is from Weihenstephan Germany. That probably means it is repackaged 34/70. The Berlin yeast has “Berlin lineage” with “balanced esters” may be repackaged S-23. S-23 is from the VLB in Berlin and has fruity esters. Morebeer writes this on the S-23 page: “Like Fermentis Saflager S-23 Lager Yeast? Then you will love CellarScience[emoji2400] BERLIN Dry Lager Yeast!”
