Experimental Brewing podcast Episode 25

Second half of the Q&A episode is now ready for your listening and “learning” pleasure!

But first, before we dive into your questions, we’re back with your feedback from the first Q&A episode and some Barley Crop Reports that we’ve cribbed from our friend Teri Fahrendorf and Denny reports on his eggs, because they’re expensive!

Then we grabbed a chance to talk with multiple (no, really, multiple) award-winning homebrewer Joe Formanek. Normally we’d subject Joe to the whole twenty questions routine because seriously the man’s impressive, but you can go read his profile in Homebrew All-Stars until we get back to that. Why the wait? Because Joe has an interesting new brewing product that he’s helping spread the word on - Brewtan B. What is Brewtan B? Well, listen to the episode and find out.

Speaking of finding out - we’re happy to announce our next experiment - this one is completely focused on figuring out if Brewtan B does what it says on the tin. (And in that spirit we’re giving our IGORs some time to have some fun as well)

Then we get into your questions. For convenience’s sake we’ve divided the questions into general topic categories. This episode we tackle Packaging and Philosophy Questions.  We even have more “live” callers!

Is this episode not available on itunes? I just tried to download it through the podcast app and the most recent is 24

Yep.  Which podcast app did you use that didn’t work?

Just listened, Denny. Thanks for getting Joe on there, good info from the source. Really looking forward to the IGOR results.

Apple Podcast

Maybe it hadn’t propagated yet?  Just checked Apple Podcast on my iPad and it was there now.

Does he suggest 1/4 tsp of brew tan b per 5 gal of strike water, or in the strike water?

Per 5 gallons is my understanding. But I’m not sure what to use if I have 4 gallons of strike water, or 4.5 gallons of strike water and 3.5 gallons of sparge water…

Probably should weigh out a 1/4 tsp and go by weight/volume of water.  Maybe do a few samples to average the weight, if 1/4 tsp is difficult to measure out…

Try measuring 1/12 of a teaspoon for my little 1.7-gallon batches.

I’ve got a gram scale! It’s for brewing.

Still not showing up in my Apple Podcasts feed.

Same here. Could be one of many causes including the fact that the podcast app sucks. It works better than it did, but it often stalls on downloads and doesn’t update the feed very quickly.

I have a great relationship with the Apple Podcasts App. It has served me well but in this instance I am struggling. I’ve tried all the other available podcast platforms and am striking out.

I can stream it on the website but i’d like to be able to skip right to the Interview and Experiment sections.

Still doesn’t show up for me today on iTunes

That validates that it isn’t only the app.

Derek, you’re the lucky one. That app had been horrible since day one. Reviews are no longer available now that it comes pre-installed, but it was rough up until iOS 9. I still have some issues, but nowhere as bad as before.

I streamed most of the interview through the website.

Per 5 gal. of either mash or sparge water, added to the water
