We’re putting together a Brewtan B experiment for the podcast and we have 2 signups left if anyone here is interested. You need to go to experimentalbrew.com and sign up to be an IGOR before you can sign up for the experiment. Once you’re in, I’ll send you some Brewtan. You’ll have to brew 2 batches of a favorite recipe you know well, one with and one without Brewtan. Then you’ll have to set up a blind tasting and report the results on the website. We hope to get a total 15 brewers and have each one get at least 6 tasters so we have close to or above 100 data points.
To sign up as an IGOR just email igor@experimentalbrew.com with your experimentalbrew.com username!
details…
What is the schedule for completion of brewing, testing, reporting?
Joe, we need to have your results by the end of Nov. If you’ve got an account on our website, let me know and I can give you a peek at the details.
I don’t have an account, but it’s moot as I can’t commit to a tight schedule like that. Three kids and no free evenings of weekends for the foreseeable future.
I can commit as long as I can brew on separate days.
I can’t wait to get to the bottom of this Brewtan B stuff, or probably end up with more questions.
I can’t do the experiment in time but I am interested in the instructions for the experiment. I just got Brewtan-B last week. Now I need to learn to use it.

1/4 tsp. per 5 gal. in your strike water.
1/2 tsp. mixed in a slurry 15 min. before end of boil, before any other finings you might use.
Brew 2 batches of the same recipe (one you’re familiar with) as close together as possible. One with Brewtan and the other without. When they’re both ready, hold a blind triangle tasting
Are you also adding it to your sparge Denny?
Are you also adding it to your sparge Denny?
Nope. Joe said nothing about that and I’m sticking with the instructions from the master!
So a thicker mash would use less. Could it potentially be overpowered by the large amount of untreated sparge water? Obviously thinking low to moderate gravity beer in my example.
I breezed through Drew’s instructions last night on my phone, so I can’t recall what his procedures called for. I need to print them and make notes.

No, mash ratio does not matter. You’re overthinking this…it’s based on batch size. Use the amounts I posted in the way I posted.
I don’t think I am overthinking it, but I guess it doesn’t matter as I won’t need to match the results of somebody else. I’m excited to try it. Recipe I’m using is clean and malty, so it should showcase results well.
I’m going .1g per gallon strike and sparge for mash, and .2 gallon per finished gallon at 15.

Please don’t do that. Please use the amounts and times I listed.

Yes, and he got it wrong. We discussed it and he’s changed the writeup now. My amounts and times come from the company rep, who is a multi award winning homebrewer.
From the write up - “Joe recommends a dosing rate of 1/4 tsp (0.5gm) per 5 gallons of sparge/mash water and 1/2 tsp (1.0gm) dissolved into a beer slurry and added to the boil at 16 minutes. It’s a wee amount!”
Not trying to argue. You say tomato, I say potato. You use volume, I use mass.

Sorry for the confusion! Sure, use mass if that’s what you like. But please don’t put it in the sparge water. I think…I’m gonna try to confirm with Joe.
