German Pils hops besides Hallertau

Title says it all…What other hops do y’all prefer in a german pils besides Hallertau?

Hallertau is the region.
I like:
Hallertau Mittelfrüh
Hallertau Tradition
Hallertau Perle for bittering
Hallertau Magnum for Bittering
Hallertau Saphir
Hallertau Mandarina Bavaria is not classic, I like it

This explains some of it.

I don’t buy hops labeled as just “Hallertau”

Tettnang is another region. We know Tettnanger Tettnang. Recently I found there are Tettnanger Mittelfrüh Hops grow, but good luck finding those.

^^^ Those.
But personally, I’ve also been very happy with Liberty.

sorry, should have been more clear, guess I was asking which non german hops folks like in a german pils. I am making a resolution to only brew with domestic hops in 2021 asnd I make quite a few german pils.

Mt. Hood is at the top of my list

what differentiates Mt. Hood from the other domestic HMF replacements like libery and Ultra?

Mt. Hood and Liberty would be my starting point.

A pro brewer friend says 2:1 Liberty to Mt Hood works well.

Vanguard and Ultra are two more, but hard to find.

Mt. Hood is at the top of my list

Same here. Love Mt. Hood.

And you posted that twice, Denny :stuck_out_tongue:

Doing too may things at once…and I REALLY like Mt. Hood!  ;D

Once for the hop strain and the second time for the mountain, itself, perhaps?  It is quite a sight I hear tell.

I like Mandarina Bavaria. I use it in a few of my lagers! You will get nice tangerine notes from it. I have used it as a dry hop too with favorable results.

I like mandarina Bavaria, to my palate it tastes incredibly similar to cascade, I think cascade is in its parentage.

While Saaz is a signature of another style, it’s still a possibility. I do like Tetnanger since it has a typical and traditional flavor for a GP.

I like Liberty and Mt.Hood also.

It doesn’t quite quite come off as a traditional German Pils, but I love Motueka in this style. You can taste its Saaz lineage, but it has a great lime zest character that is really nice in a crisp lager. I brew one of these just about every year in the early spring.

I have used Sterling, Santiam, Crystal, Vanguard. I liked Santiam a lot, but it’s super super floral.  I’ve heard good things about Liberty as well, but I haven’t tried it.

New hops coming too: https://appellationbeer.com/blog/new-lager-friendly-hops/

Cheers!

awesome info, thank you!

I made a really nice lager bittered with Magnum/Perle and finished with Perle.

Galena and Liberty make a fine pils-type beer.  Galena and Mt. Hood also works well.  Back when I was using those hops in regular rotation, I would often blend Liberty with Mt. Hood for the finishing additions.  It helped that I was getting my hops from Mark Garetz during that period and Mark had his hops analyzed for oil content, which made finishing additions much more consistent.  I do not know why the big hop brokers do not list oil content on their hops. Alpha acids are useful for bittering additions, but they do not tell one much when it comes to finishing additions.
