GW Idaho Pilsner malt

I just picked up a sack of this from my LHBS, which bought it from its distributor with me in mind.  Can anyone tell me their experiences with this malt?  It’s totally new to me…

I have used GW Pils for years as well as their domestic 2 row and Munich. I haven’t heard it called Idaho Pilsner. I use the Pils mostly for light colored IPA as in East Coast style. I do brew some lager with it. It is a great malt for me and a huge value where I live Utah.

The Idaho is different from the Pilsner per their website,  it’s from a specific, single Idaho barley.  I too am interested in info on any newer, less commodity-like US malts worth trying.

I just got a bag of it, but haven’t had a chance to use it yet either.  I’m told that they intend it to be a Weyermann competitor.

What is the price point on something like that?

My LHBS has it for $1.15 per pound.  Reg GW 2 row is $1.05.  It is a small premium but not excessive. Much cheaper than Weyerman.  I’m planning to try it in my next lager.

Brewing a SMaSH pilsner on the 4th with GW Pure Idaho pils, and Liberty hops.  I let you know how it turns out.

My all Idapils German pils was ready in 10 days and absolutely delicious.

Thumbs up here, too.  I just tapped a mid-May brewed (LODO) Idaho Pure Pilsner, fermented with S-189.  My palate says it has a slightly sweeter profile than Weyermann, but not offensively sweet or anything nearing cloying.  I did not do head to head blind triangle testing, so take this as purely anecdotal comments.

These specialty malts are going to catch on, I believe.

That’s the same thing I thpught…sweet but not in a negative way.  Big malt flavor.

As long as it doesn’t taste like potatoes!
