How to get gin into an IPA?

I have 10 gallons of an American IPA almost done with primary fermentation. For one carboy I would like to add some gin flavor to the dry hop schedule I have planned. Has anyone tried this and have a recommendation? Should I add a few ounces of my favorite gin directly to secondary? Should I soak something like oak or apple wood chips and add those?

Thanks!

I would add ingredient reminiscint of gin instead of gin itself. Juniper and any botanicals…

Yeah, gin is made from juniper berries, get some juniper berries or extract.

Better and certainly cheaper than gin.  Save the gin for martinis.  8)

Anyone seen my olives?

I think I would take the direct approach and just put some gin in the beer.  I tried dosing an IPA in the glass with some gin and it worked pretty well.

:o

Thanks, guys! I think I’m going to try the juniper berry or extract route.

Gin soaked juniper berries? Crush or crack the berries soak in gin or vodka to kill any bugs add them to a muslin cloth.
Make a tincture maybe?
Ive heard of adding spruce tips into beer. Why not try juniper tips?

Make sure you have a light touch with juniper berries.

Some species of juniper are toxic. I wouldn’t roll the dice on that one myself.

To me, a lot of piny hop flavors come across more like juniper. I’d just dry hop with Chinook, Simcoe and Lemon Drop, then call it Bombay Sapphire IPA.

Why not just add gin to taste?  That’s what I’ve done.

This^^^^^…didn’t you guys listen tomthe interview I did with Van Havig at Gigantic in PDX?  Why complicate it?

That is where I got the idea from, never would have thought to try it otherwise.

I have to admit my first thought when I read the question was 'I think I’d try pouring it".  ;D

I’ve been trying to not be so sarcastic lately though.

You’re way ahead of me

I just don’t know why you would do that to good gin…

But seriously, this is a thing?  Gin in IPA?  Maybe I need to get out more.

What is this “get out” that you speak of?

My first exposure was a gin barrel IPA from Gigantic Brewing in PDX.  The moment it hit my tongue I knew it was on my favorite IPAs ever.  The gin and hops just blended perfectly.

Hmm, that’s pretty interesting, Denny. Never heard of it from a commercial brewery before now (guess I need to get out more often, too). Any idea what hops they use in it?
