Maris Otter sub?

Just curious on what you guys would sub in for Maris Otter for a stout? I usually go about 50/50 Golden promise and MO?

A good domestic malt like Rahr 2 row or Rahr Pale Ale malt plus ~ 3% Victory or Biscuit would give you the slight toasty character of MO. Honestly I don’t bother with MO in a beer as roasty as stout anyway. No harm in using it either, though.

Golden Promise, not exactly MO but still has a British flavor.

Pearl is also a choice. Optic too, but I have never used that one.

I agree. Most people would be hard pressed to tell what base grain is used in a stout.

+2 - Any Pale Ale malt should be just fine as a sub for MO in a stout. Vienna works pretty well as a sub for MO, too.

Any British base malt would be just fine. But as stated above, hard to even discern in a roastier stout.

If you are feeling adventurous try 50/50 golden promise and best dark Munich as a base in your stout, obviously with you roasted stuff too.

I like Gambrinus ESB malt.

I like Golden Promise
