i agree. my wife’s nephew does this for a living on cell phone towers. watching this video, or as much as i could stomach, literally made me quesy. somebody’s gotta do it, but sure ain’t gonna be me!
I’ve seen this clip before and it still scares the s%$&* out of me. :o
I wonder what they get paid for a climb. :-\
i could not watch it all. man o man. i would much rather go deep under the ocean than that.
uhg. nope, I’m with you. not enough. just not enough, ever anywhere.
i just would not be able to do it. Physically, I think my body would freeze before I got over 50 feet. It stops listening trying to get on the 2nd story roof. I just don’t think it would be possible for me, no matter the pay, no matter if I “wanted to”.
For all the attention we have to pay in the design of equipment that goes into areas where flammable or explosive gasses are, you think we could make these a little safer to deal with.
Terrifying video. You won’t catch me up there. I am amazed OSHA does not require use of a safety harness.
I have a buddy that used to do this. Once he hit 50 years old he told his employer he wouldn’t climb towers anymore. It was his knees that pushed him out of it. He says it doesn’t bother you once you get over the fear the first time. I’m not sure he improved his risk much though because now he does “tank work” mostly. That’s where you climb up a big tank (like a 1 million gallon+ tank) and then repel into it. It’s not as high but you do it with oxygen tanks and in the dark.
I would never survive the climb anymore. It’s a young mans job for sure.

This is the only tank I’d be willing to climb into:
And as far as climbing towers, “Hell No!!”
At the bike shop we got a fine from OSHA for not wearing safety glasses when using WD-40. How on earth is “free climbing” a 1700ft tower OK?
They signed a waiver, you needed a better lobbyist, I don’t know.
OSHA has funny rules. Did you know its a violation of OSHA rules to walk in a cattle lot barefooted? Who, exactly, needed this rule? If you think its okay to walk through animal waste with 1200lb animals you may not be qualified to work on the farm.

*** Edited to only sign it once. ***
I watched the video. The climbers did have helmets, safety glasses, safety harnesses, D-ring carabiners, and carabiner/rebar hooks, and tool bag lanyards.
yes but they didn’t use the safety harnesses except when they were resting. or working it looks like, once they got to the top.
I would be fine until I had to make the transition to the outside climbing, i’m not sure if i could do that part. In any case, one thing is certain, once i got up that high, i would totally pee off that tower.
This is another video that will kickstart your vertigo:
when he rotates the camera to look down, i reached out and held the edge of my desk the first time hahaha!
I had to shut it off. It was making me sick!
Yeah, they say at about 1:00 that they “free climb” without safety equipment because it’s faster and easier. One good gust of wind though, and it’s a long way down. I bet you’d have time to think about all of the steps in your life that lead you to that point like, five times before you hit the ground.
Where else would you pee? It’s not like they have a bathroom up there.
Just make sure you check the wind before relieving yourself. You still have to climb down.
Paul
They should climb with parachutes so they can jump off when they are done.
Sounds fun but it would be another 40+lbs to carry up with you. Most employers frown on you base jumping while on the clock too I’d imagine. ;D
