For reasons only known to my therapist I have until recently neglected the existence of the podcast phenomenon.
Can we compile a list of good podcasts? What I have found so far are the obvious ones:
Those are the ones I listen to as well. I gave up on the brewing network though. I just got weary of all the stupid humor and peripheral crap that seemed like it took up 50% of the podcast. I want beer info.
Giving up on the brewing network entirely is a bad idea. I don’t bother with the session, brew strong has lost its relevance IMO, and Jamil Show is pretty ho-hum but worth a listen. If you are not listening to the Sour Hour and Dr Homebrew, you’re cheating yourself.
My lhbs has one called Come and Brew It.
I really enjoy it. They get a lot of local breweries and homebrew clubs to come on the show as well as a local BJCP judge that is a…grand master? Whatever the hell is the highest you can be. Pretty good stuff.
For homebrewing podcasts I listen to the following regularly:
Basic Brewing Radio
Experimental Brewing
The Sour Hour
Brewing with Style (formerly the Jamil show, formerly Can you brew it) - although this should really be a shorter show now that Scott and John Plise left
The homebrewing ones I listen to depending on the topic/guest:
BeerSmith
The Session
Brew Strong
Non-homebrew podcasts I listen to:
Star Talk Radio
Discovery (BBC World Service)
BN has entertaining stuff, some good info, some head scratching stuff. Like on the Jamil show, the cohost is Tasty and almost every time Jamil asks him if he’s brewed the style they are discussing, he has not brewed it… Doc has been judging on Dr Homebrew lately and says things that probably drive real judges nuts, like smelling astringency etc. But, I still listen. The Session has become very commercial beer centric.
Lately I’ve come to enjoy James Spencer’s Basic Brewing Radio. It has an NPR feel at first, but the general atmosphere is much more friendly and light hearted. Might go so far as to say “grown up” as compared to the raucous frat house style of the BN.
