Thomas-Fawcett a good substitute for Simpsons Golden Promise?

My LHBS doesn’t carry Simpsons malts and I’ve only every used Golden Promise for my Scottish Ales.  They said they could order in a T-F ‘golden promise like’ pale malt.  I have no idea if they meant Maris Otter or Halcyon.

Would either of these make a good substitute?  I’ve use Maris Otter a number of times and like it a lot.  How do you think it would work in a Scottish Ale.

MO should be fine. They’re both very similiar. Halcyon’s a cousin, lower protein levels, lighter in color

I’ve never used it, but wouldn’t hesitate - I have been thoroughly pleased with all of TF offerrings i have tried.

FWIW, I used Crisp Pale Malt in an 80/- a few weeks ago and it turned out fantastic.  I usually use Golden Promise, but I had a bunch of Pale Malt on hand so I just went with it.  I think you’ll be fine using Pale.

Can’t go wrong with Thomas Fawcett.

FWIW I use Thomas Fawcett MO in my Scottish ales, since I buy it by the sack. I’ve never brewed with the Golden Promise but I certainly haven’t had any complaints. (In fact my 80/- got a 41 recently.)

I have used MO for my Strong Scotch Ales and they tend to win awards.  Nothing wrong with a good English Pale Ale malt.  Golden Promise is also excellent.  Don’t be afraid of any of these for your brews

Thanks all!  Thanks for the link blatz.  This must be what my local shop meant.  They said they could order a TF ‘Golden Promise’, but I couldn’t find any reference to it (although I was checking the UK site).

I may go with MO anyway. My LHBS wants me to buy the whole sack if they order it for me.  I’m fine with that, but the wife may not be… although the 80/- was her favorite, so I do have some room for negotiation. ;D

+1. I use it for everything but Belgians (don’t do lagers). Buy the sack and you’ll be happy.

TF MO is a great malt. You might find your pale beers a little darker and the flavor a little maltier with TF grain. My HB club recently compaired TF malt to others and we found TF malt to be a little darker and the beers slightly maltier, especially with some of their roasted malts.
