My preferred British malt is Pearl. I have been using this barley for more than two decades. My LHBS did not have any Pearl in stock, so I picked up a bag of Golden Promise. I am hoping that Golden Promise is at least as good if not better than Pearl because it costs more than Pearl. I went through a couple 25kg bags of Maris Otter before I decided that it is not for me. Pearl has more refined flavor than Maris Otter. Has anyone used all three barley cultivars?
I use Simpson’s Golden Promise for my wee shroomy. I prefer it to Fawcett. But remember, that while barley varieties matter, how the maltster treats them matters more. Simpson and Fawcett both use GP, but the malts have a distinctly different flavors.
Sadly, I have Fawcett Golden Promise. I have used Fawcett Pearl and Fawcett Maris Otter. Fawcett Maris Otter is not for me. Hopefully, Fawcett Golden Promise is clean tasting like Fawcett Pearl. I liked Baird Pale Ale Malt when I could get it, but it is not a single variety. Do you have a line on the Moravian barley’s that are grown for Coors out in Montana?
I too prefer the Simpsons GP. It has a taste that is malty sweet over malty toasty, as compared to Maris Otter. Simpsons ownes the cultivar. GP is the malt in Timothy Taylor Landlord.
To be more specific, Simpson’s GP is the malt in Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. I fell in love with that beer during a visit to England, and was thrilled when I found that I could get all the ingredients for it at home. It is one of my favorite beers to brew.
Well, I am going to work my way through this bag before giving domestic 2-row another shot. The LHBS closest to me is now stocking Malteurop’s Wisconsin Select 2-row product at a reasonable price. It is not as good as Maryland Homebrew’s (MDHB) domestic 2-row price, but the store is few minutes from my house versus a forty-minute ride in both directions. Plus, domestic 2-row at MDHB other from Briess is by special order only. I am definitely not a fan of Briess 2-row.

A friend of mine says too much Golden Promise isn’t all that good. He inspired a super simple recipe that came out great! 90% Maris Otter and 10% Golden Promise with about 4oz of EKG and Wyeast 1469

I disagree with your friend. It depends on the beer you are making. It won’t give you the toasty aspect. It has a great malt flavor. It works for something like a TTL Best Bitter.
Agreed. It’s a matter of taste and the recipe it’s being used for. Any base malt can be used for 100% of the grist, so if you think it’s too much then either you’re using it in the wrong recipe, or you simply don’t like that malt.
According to the website, Timothy Taylor Landlord uses Simpson’s Golden Promise as its base malt. What amount of sugar (and type) and which yeast strain? Not sure on that.
