What's Brewing This Weekend - 4/8 Edition

Well, apparently someone was eager to discuss things last week! Now I’m back.

I’m actually going to brew today - 2 batches.

1 all-grain of some variety that I haven’t decided yet and 1… extract - dun dun duh. Haven’t done it a while and figured I should to keep my head fresh about doing it.

no brewing.

Judging NHC Denver friday and both saturday sessions.  anyone else?

Finishing touches on the control panel of my brewstand and hopefully a test run. I’ll post pics if I get it finished.

No brewing.

Have Friday off so I’m doing a simple Citra Pale Ale.  I’m still unsure if I want to bitter with Citra, or just use some US Magnum that I have.

Anyone have an opinion on bittering with Citra?  I’ve read some say it’s a little harsh.

I’m taking Friday off to brew up my second annual wee heavy.  Shooting for an OG of 1.118 or so 8)

Between the long mash and the long boil it’s gonna be a long brewday.  But if I get started early enough I should be able to get wrapped up in time to throw back a few of last years batch in peace and quiet before the family gets home from school.

A “few” of last year’s batch??  You won’t care or even know when the family gets home

ESB on Friday morning. I just put the starter in the fridge to cold crash.

Maybe a Danish lager while the outside temperature is still keeping my cellar bulkhead unseasonably chilly, aka free refrigeration.

Oh, and I’ll be putting my burner/kettle to an alternate use Saturday keeping the Scouts fundraiser spaghetti dinner supplied with boiling water.  Might brew a wheat/amarillo/gumbally wheat on Sunday, though.  Haven’t decided the recipe details yet.

No doubt that I will be feeling good.  I’ll probably keep it to two though.  So a couple

Brewing the wit base for a raspberry wit.  Have a crapload of frozen berries from last fall’s harvest.  Probably start with 5 lbs. of macerated berries in the secondary, give it a taste after a few days and add more if necessary.

Saturday I’m doing a Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale (call it whatever you prefer!).  I bottled one a few weeks ago and it’s almost gone already.  Probably one of my favorite styles now.    This one will be going into a keg.

I know its not the weekend yet, but yesterday I did an Octoberfest.  I just finished building a kegerator and couldn’t wait to start making lagers.  This was my first attempt at a lager, so we’ll see how it turns out.  My boss wants to trade a batch of O’fest for some elk meat, so I want to get a recipe worked out before hunting season.

Be nice with your comments… I have a few in there…  ;)

I’ll be brewing a Blonde Ale with a 2-row malt I haven’t used before. Figured the Blonde would be a good way to see how it works.  Cheers!!!

Oops.  Did I usurp your usual role?

This weekend I’ll be moving my cider to the secondary fermenter and adding 8-10lbs of strawberries (I also have some strawberry extract that I’ll use to fine tune the flavor/sweetness after the secondary fermentation).

I’m also going to be brewing a Chamomile Ale (Based on a Blonde Ale recipe) and fine tuning an Imperial IPA recipe for the weekend of April 15th.

I’m going to make the IPA that I was going to make last weekend…the empty fermenters are calling me…

Planting Hops:
Cascade
Columbus (Zeus)
Mt. Hood

Ballpark Pils (CAP).  Made a big starter today.  This will be batch number 100!! ;D

Putting together the Blichmann TopTier that is supposed to arrive later this week. Saturday is assembly and plumbing and testing. Sunday is my first batch on the new system; american IPA (simcoe/amarillo), it’s the recipe I’m most familiar with from my old system, and therefore the one I feel most comfortable with making changes to on the fly based on efficiency and such.

About time, too. I bottled my last batch on Sunday, and now have nothing but empty fermentors.

Congratulations! And way to buck tradition by doing a not huge beer. I did an RIS for #100 and ended up with a half gallon of my first runnings on the floor because I forgot to close a tap  So much for experience bringing wisdom.

Tomorrow I’m brewing a small batch of a Belgian Pale to try out Calypso hops I bought on a whim from Hops Direct. They describe them as having apple and pear aromas but the first reports I’ve seen, people are saying citrusy. And since it’s supposed to rain, I decided to do an SN Celebration type IPA, too. I love having bulk ingredients on hand.

No brewing for me this weekend.  I need to buy another sack of grain before I can do any brewing again, unless I want to pick up some extract.  Hmmmmm, I haven’t done an extract beer for quite some time, this could be an opportunity to do it again, for kicks.
