For the most part, I like lagers. But then again, I’m very green and I haven’t tried all styles. I have had some others and found that I like some ales too.
For me the UK-style bitter is the perfect beer. Pungent, earthy hop aroma that is still understated, rich malt aromas, and fruity yeast esters all combining to make a perfectly balanced session beer that packs a lot more flavor into a “smaller” beer. If I could have but one beer for the rest of my life, this’d be it.
Honorable mentions include homebrewed pilsner, IPA and its very interesting spawn Tripel IPA, rauchbier, and the “middle of the road” stouts in the FES and double stout class.
Too many styles, too many moods to say what I like best.
N. German Pils is a favorite.
Sometimes I crave Rauchbier.
Dunkel and Doppelbock are tasty.
I brew bitter several times a year.
Lambics and Flanders Reds are great.
A keg of Smoked Porter just seems to disappear.
I usually have some Am. Barleywine around, also.
A good IPA/DIPA is a thing of beauty.
Actually Malt Liquor was 1B in the 1997 and 1998 Guidelines:
B. Malt Liquor
Roughly similar to other American lagers, but higher in alcohol
from the addition of sugar to boost the original gravity. That and
short lagering times often give the beer a rough edge. Gold to
amber in color with little to no hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma.
Commercial Examples: Colt 45, Schlitz Malt Liquor, Olde English 800.
Was it the Dixie Cup where they judged malt liquor by drinking directly from a 40 in a paper bag while sitting around a dumpster? Maybe about 6-8 years ago?
If I “had to choose” I would say Doppelbock is my favorite style hands down. I love doppelbock. What’s odd, though, is most days I would prefer to drink an IPA. I only drink doppelbock on occasion but I drink IPA weekly. But when I have a good doppelbock I take time to really sit down and enjoy it and it is always a very, very special beer.
that is well said keith - like hopfenundmalz I’m rather partial to whatever I am in the mood for. However, I do absolutely love doppelbock, but like you its an occasional thing, usually where I sit back and keep saying to myself, “Damn that is good”.
the kegs I kill quickest are IPAs though, hence why i would have to say that is my favorite if the proverbial gun was put to my head.
