Odell brews

Has anyone tried the Avant Peche?  Any thoughts?

Have you had their myrcenary?  Any thoughts?  I like the general idea and their beer is typically great but I haven’t had the chance to try some.

thanks and cheers, j

If you like big, bold American IPAs you’ll love the Myrcenery. I think it stripped a little enamel off my teeth.

yep thats what I’m looking for.  thanks

what a creative name - love Odell’s regular IPA - will have to see if they have this when I’m in San Fran next week.

I love Odells beers and Myrcenary is great, but they’ve been rubbing me the wrong way lately.  At tastings I like to ask a lot of questions, and after tasting Myrcenary, and LOVING the hop profile, I asked the guy serving (an Odell brewer) what hops they used and a rough outline of bittering vs aroma hops.  “Umm, yeah I can’t really say.”  What?  I’m not going to rip off your beer.  “Sorry, trade secret”.  Humph.

That’s a whole 'nother story in and of itself about why some brewers keep secret about stuff.  If it’s good, it’s gonna sell, and if someone tries making the same thing, then beat them.  Whatever.

Sorry, back to the topic…  ::slight_smile:
Avant peche is pretty good stuff.  I was expecting more tartness and peach flavor, but the balance is really nice (even though it doesn’t seem like all that will go well together).  Odell is pretty proud of their beers ($$) but it’s pretty high quality stuff.  And yes, their regular IPA is my favorite Colorado IPA (although modis hoperandi is a close second and it’s in CANS)

Yeah (paul & ryan) their IPA is great; in the last 4-5 years I think they have really perfected the hop flavor and aroma in their beers.  Ryan I’m ok with brewers holding onto their intellectual property, but I understand what you’re saying.  Btw, Modis Hoperandi is one hell of a beer and I have met those guys.

Oddly enough (considering that we’re just over the hill from Odell) I have a hard time finding their special brews, even though their standard line can be found just about everywhere.

The wild yeast imperial porter with peach sounds like a great combination to me. I’ve fiddled with similar flavor combos before; looks like I need to find one and fork out the bucks.

Almost all the Whole Foods carry most of their specialty beers.

???

The only whole foods that sells liquor is the one on Hampden at Tamarac Square.

By the way, where are you in Lakewood?  I’m at 6th/Union ish.

I guess if I’m going to drive 300 miles to get an odell brew I might as well just go to the brewery.

The Myrcenary is wicked dangerous.  Yum.

Anybody know what hops are used in the regular IPA?

I’d be down for trying to work out a clone recipe. Label says it’s 7.0% ABV, I’m guessing that’s about a 16.5 OG and 3.5 FG. About 6-7 SRM, so I’m betting it’s just pale base malt and a little light crystal. Bitter but not crazy, I’d say 50-60 IBU.

Hop-wise, I’d say there’s some Simcoe late, but beyond that I’m not sure. Maybe Amarillo? I get tangerine in the nose.

Edit: Now that it’s warmed up a little, I’m picking up some Centennial as well.

Unfortunately they are moving that store (with the liquor) to Boulder.

P.S.  I’m by Downing and 6th if you’re ever in the area.

I haven’t had the chance to try the beer yet, but my guesses based on myrcene levels would be simcoe, amarillo, cascade, crystal, and fuggles.  AFAIK, those hops currently have the highest levels of myrcene.

I was referring to the Mile High Wine and Spirits next to the Whole Foods in Belmar, Wadsworth and Alameda. Lots of Whole Foods have liquor stores directly next to them so I figured they were related. I’m at Wadsworth and Hampden so I usually go there or Liquor Mart at Coal Mine and Pierce. Between those 2 I can usually find anything commercial that I want to drink.

The myrcenary is pretty damn awesome. The last time I was at the brewery, they had a cask of it that was dry hopped with centennial. Effing amazing! Havent had the Avant Peche yet, but bought a bottle for a friend and they had good reviews. The Odell IPA is one of my favorite IPA’s, hands down. I really love what they do there. They have an amazing spirit and it comes through in their beers. If you’re at the brewery and they’re serving the IPA on nitro…Get one! You can thank me later.

thanks for the reply… i still haven’t had one.

Just thought I’d say that I have finally obtained a bottle of the IIPA “myrcenary” and oh my is it awesome.  This is my new favorite hop beer; I’d say it’s as impressive as any commercial “WET” or “FRESH” hop beer I’ve had (although this is just a double IPA) and maybe even a little better.  Still looking for the other brew though I’m not sure if it’s currently being brewed.  cheers, j
